Rockefeller Benefactions,

In this connection I am privileg-

ed to announce that a new element: is about to be added to those from which our resources are drawn. It is, I believe, a matter of common knowledge that the Rockefeller Foundation of New York has had under consideration the possibility of assisting our Medical Faculty, and I may say that the conditions under which such help was likely to br available came before the Cni- versity Council for consideration a week ago. Two days ago we receiv ed a telegram from the Foundationd

Anitely promising a sum of half a million Hongkong dollars for the endowment of full time Chairs in Medicine and Surgery, the only conditions attached being con- ditions making for greater efficiency and for the fulfillment of which the Council confidently look to the generosity of ather donors. Al- though the offer is at presenti limited, at our request, to the twoj Chairs of Surgery and Medicine, I may say we have every reason look for similar help in the eg Itablishment of a full time Chan of Obstetrics so soon as we are in a position to take advantage of the grant.

If I dwell upon these benefactions and there are others of consider- able, if smaller, amount to which I should be glad to refer it is in no pirit of insistence that natura), resources are the only or even the

chief source of strength for such an' institution as this. It is rather to ahew how wide and varied a res ponse was evoked by our founders when they declared us an institu- tion for the development and form- Jation of the character of students of

all races, nationalities and creeds. There is a danger that the pursuit of material gain should be regarded as the only bond of union between the men so strangely varied in race, nationality and in creed, who ake up this Hongkong of ours, and we are proud to stand as a living proof that this is not wholly true. To those of us whose duty and pri- vilege it is to tender to the East the gift of Western knowledge, there sometimes comes the feeling that it is a dangerous gift we are prov ring, and in such moments it is Flittle encouragement to us to feri? that we do at least represent the couscious recognition by the come- nity of moral dnty: that, if we faithful to our duty, no maŋ' cażi say that we of the West have come to'exploit the East without offering to her the beat of what wa Juvel
